Year 5 had a great time on their residential at FSC Preston Montford last week.
They started things off with some exciting team-building challenges, tackling a low ropes course and peg poles, and building trust and teamwork from the start. After a well-earned dinner, they put their problem-solving skills to the test in the Trading Game, learning how resources and tools are exchanged for money and how this mirrors real-world global trade.
This was followed by an incredible second day, kicking off with a hearty cooked breakfast before packing their own lunches and heading out to the river study site (Carding Mill Valley). Working in teams, they measured the river’s depth, width and speed at different points – discovering that it was both wider and faster at the bottom. They wrapped up the day with a classic campfire, complete with toasted marshmallows and a bit of time to play games together in the common room.
Day Three brought even more adventure as the children tried their hand at bushcraft! They learned how to make small fires using cotton wool and fire strikers (flint and steel) – a tricky skill that required plenty of perseverance, but they all rose to the challenge! The morning ended with shelter building, tapping into their survival skills and creativity.
A massive thank you to Mrs Brennan, Mrs Barker and Mrs Andrews for accompanying the children and enabling such a wonderful opportunity.
