Year 5 Reading Page

In Year 5 we read daily, both at home and at school. We read together in guided reading and we read class texts that act as a "book as a hook".

Reading links into all of our subjects. In RE we read the Bible or prayers to help us with our learning; in history and geography we use our reading skills for research and in maths we have to use our reading comprehension skills to work out what we need to do in word problems.

We use a “book as a hook” to support our literacy lessons. This means that our writing is inspired by, and linked to, a specific book. So far this year, we have used three "books as a hook".

The Tear Thief by Carol Anne Duffy

Each night, in the hours between supper and bedtime, the Tear Thief carries her waterproof, silvery sack as she steals the tears of every child who cries. But what does she do with all those tears? This warm, poignant, and beautifully illustrated story offers a thought-provoking message and a starting point to share children's emotional experiences.

The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde

The gilded statue of the Happy Prince stands on a pedestal overlooking a town. Covered in gold leaf with sapphires for eyes and a ruby on his sword-hilt, the statue receives admiration from all passersby.

Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo

"The Birdman puts spells on people. We mustn't talk to him. We’re not supposed to."

Gracie and Daniel have been warned to stay away from the mad Birdman – but the message in the sand tells them that the Birdman isn’t what he seems.
Then they get lost in the fog and stranded on Samson Island. Should they believe the Birdman’s story that the island is cursed?
