Year 5 had a fantastic STEM day last week, taking part in the Smallpiece Trust Road to RIAT competition. Smallpiece Trust partnered with the Royal Air Force to provide this exciting Virtual STEM Day. In class it was run as a half-day, online workshop, where the children worked in teams to design, build and test a rocket for launching a satellite into space.
Year 5 had great fun working on their rockets, as well as building their teamwork, listening, and problem-solving skills. After the rockets were designed and built, the children learnt how to test their rockets, seeing and learning how different factors such as friction, gravity and other forces act together to impact success of launch.
Congratulations to the team whose rocket went the furthest when launched! We will now submit their top sustainable aircraft design and see who will win nationally!
Thank you to the Smallpiece Trust for inviting us to take part in the project, which is generously sponsored and delivered in partnership with the RAF Charitable Trust, the RAF, and supported by Accenture.
