As a culmination of this term’s DT topic on designing and preparing healthy filled flatbreads (with a focus on including Greek ingredients to link with their history topic on the Ancient Greeks), Year 5 set up and ran a pop-up cafe for their parents and family members.

The children worked together to design a menu, including different fillings from their individual designs, then split into two groups: waiting staff and kitchen staff. The waiting staff prepared the seating area, greeted guests, took their orders, ran the orders to the kitchen, delivered orders to customers and cleared tables once people had left, under the watchful eye of Maître D’, Mr Hall. The kitchen staff prepped ingredients (supported and kept on track by head chef, Mrs Andrews), then prepared flatbreads according to the orders, before cleaning down the kitchen area afterwards.

The flatbreads were delicious, the waiting staff polite and charming, and everyone worked together, supporting one another and running an extremely efficient and smooth service. The children exemplified our Catholic Social Teaching elements of ‘The Dignity and Rights of Workers’ and ‘Dignity of the Human Person’, with everyone playing their part; happy to help and keen to serve others. Well done Year 5 and thank you Mr Hall and Mrs Andrews.
