Year 4: Viking Shields

Year 4 rounded off their Anglo Saxon/Viking history topic off with a focus on Viking shields. The children researched them and the use of heraldry that was depicted on them. They found out about the importance of colour and design, including the inclusion of runes. They applied their learning to designing and making their own, replica shields, paying particular attention to the shield bosses, which they found out were important as they provided protection for the hand grip of the shield bearer, as well as helping to deflect blows and give an extra layer of protection.

Afterwards the class took their shields into the hall for a game of dingibats-something that Viking boys would have enjoyed playing as part of their training to become a warrior. The children found out that it was a bit like dodgeball, but with shields!

They finished off the afternoon by learning about shield walls and how the Vikings used them to help protect each other-what a great way to end the term.
