Year 4 Outdoor Learning

Year 4’s ‘Book as a Hook’ in the English lessons, is ‘Leon and the Place Between’ written by Angela McAllister and illustrated by Grahame Baker-Smith. In the story Leon volunteers to be in Abdul Kazam’s magic show, and is transported to a mysterious, exotic world, called the Place Between. This is a world alive with magic and filled with rabbits, playing cards, doves, coins and even a magician’s assistant!

The children took this as their inspiration and worked in two groups to create their own ‘Place Between’. They let their imaginations run wild and enjoyed making glitter paths, doily walls, hanging flags and stars etc to make a ‘Flags Place Between’ and a ‘Cosy Place Between’. Afterwards they thought about what Leon would find and do in these new places.

The groups visited each others places and gave feedback using a praise sandwich, before using their British Value of democracy, to vote on how to finish the afternoon. ‘Own Learning’ narrowly won, and the children took advantage of all of the regular activities that Forest School has to offer, climbing, digging, mud painting, den building, exploring etc. What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
