The pupils in Year 4 led a beautiful assembly this week for the whole school and for their parents. In class, they have been learning about the Church as the Body of Christ and they explained this concept very effectively through song, drama, art, prayer and scripture. They began their assembly by singing: ‘We are the Church.’ A little group of pupils then read the prayer of St Teresa while miming their own actions to it.
During the assembly, the two presenters of a talk show were constantly interrupted by tweets from the Y4 pupils to explain the scripture and the Year of Jubilee. ‘Fr Carter’ used St Paul’s letter to the Corinthians to tell us that, just like a body needs all its parts to be effective, so the Church needs each one of us to work together in our varied roles. Another group of children then used the legend of the rainbow to show that all the colours are needed to come together and to stop arguing about who is most important, in order to create a beautiful rainbow. They linked this to the Catholic Social Teaching principles of Solidarity and Family and Community. They explained how we come together at Mass as the family of God, and issued an invitation to all to join us for our Whole School Mass on Saturday evening.
The audience was then taken on an exhibition of their paintings which depicted their understanding of the Church as the Body of Christ. What very talented artists!
The assembly ended with the hymn: ‘This is my Body’ which sent us forth thinking about how we can be Christ’s Body, working together to build His Kingdom during this Jubilee year.
