As part of their learning about Roman Britain, Year 3 turned into Rotten Romans for the afternoon! The children were each given a plain shield and were divided into two groups and organised into the Roman army ranks of legate, prefect, tribune and centurion. They painted their shields in their group’s colours, then learnt about how the Romans made and used their shields, including the bosses and how soldiers decorated their shields after winning in battle.

On arrival in ‘Britain’ (Forest School), these Rotten Romans set about building fortresses to protect them from the hostile natives.

After all of their hard work there was time to take their shields onto the playground and put them to use, playing a game, where each side had to use their shields to defend themselves from beanbag attacks. Great fun.
