Year 2 have started their ‘seasonal changes’ topic in science this week.  They used their observational skills to identify and discuss the changes in the world around them, on an ‘autumnal walk’, where they identified how the trees were changing (including the leaves changing colour and falling off the branches). 

As budding botanists, the children developed their scientific understanding and learnt that the trees that lose their leaves are called deciduous trees!  They also spotted other features of autumn, including conkers, acorns and squirrels. 

As a reward for their wonderful work in class, they played at the park together before heading back to school, full of excitement, ready to meet another ‘autumn animal’: Mrs Sweeney had brought in a hedgehog for them to see and the children used their scientific skill of questioning to find out more. 

What a fantastic way to learn about this change in season and make links with our Catholic Social Teaching principle of Stewardship, by talking about our responsibility for looking after our wonderful work.
