Year 1 Clay Castles

The topic in year one this half term is castles, all the children worked with the clay and asked lots of questions about how it gets out of the ground and why it is terracotta colour, as much as I tried to explain that it goes through many processes to become smooth, Lilly still had to lick it!
The children all learned how to roll it to a perfect thickness by rolling it between two sticks, and how to put a pattern on it using simple things such as pencils, paperclips and ends of sticks. They found out that by doing all the decoration and cutting the turrets out first while the clay was flat they could roll it into a cylinder shape much easier.
They finished off by making a flag out of sticky labels and straws to name their castle turrets.
