This afternoon Mrs Sanders and Mrs Andrews took the Key Stage 2 Eco Councillors and some members of Gardening Club, over to Abbey park to sow wild flower seeds. This is Year 3 of a 5-year project that Holy Redeemer are helping the Council with, sowing wild flower seeds on different areas of Abbey Park each year. Each year, as the project progresses, the biodiversity of Abbey Park increases, making it a much better environment for insects and minibeasts, especially bees.
The children and staff met Kevin and John, from Walcott Nursery, who taught the children about different types of plants (annuals, bi-annuals and perennials), before showing them how to prepare the ground, sow the seeds and tamp down. The children were delighted when ex staff member, Sam Andrews, joined them, as part of her current role working for the Abbey.
The children worked in pairs to sow seeds in their allocated sections and were really pleased to be able to make this contribution to our local community and the environment; a wonderful way to live out our Catholic Social Teaching elements of Stewardship, Family & Community and Dignity of Work.
