Reception Class Round-up: Mr Gumpy

Last week Reception Class were very excited to find that Henrietta the hedgehog had finally come out of hibernation and delivered two books linked to their new topic: ‘Ticket to Ride’. The fiction book she delivered was Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car by John Burningham. The non-fiction book was all about different types of vehicles.

In their continuous provision the children painted pictures of Mr Gumpy’s motor car, retelling the story in the small world tray, In the finger gym they worked hard putting nuts and bolts together and carefully decorating a car picture, using tiny buttons and beads.

The class also been looked at photographs of cars from the past and were amazed at how cars have changed over the years.

In Maths Reception have been thinking about time and developing an understanding of what 1 minute and 5 minutes feel like. They read ‘5 Minutes Peace’, by Jill Murphy and then went and ran around the playground for 5 minutes. The children then came back into class to see what they could do in 1 minute. They had to see how many times they could write their name in a minute, how many times they could write their new tricky word – said – in a minute, see how many beads they could thread onto a lace in a minute and how many cubes tall our tower could be. They also worked in groups to see how far they could count in 1 minute!

In Science the class started a new topic on forces and investigated different surfaces to see which was the best for the toy car. After their lesson the children enjoyed continuing to investigate with their friends.

In expressive arts and design the class started to explore ‘printing’. They started by exploring printing with their hands in dry and damp sand and then went on to print with different parts of their hands. The children were amazed at the different shapes they created!

Finally, the class used a range of soft and hard junk modelling pieces to find out the different prints they created. This week they are going to use their new skills and techniques to create their own pictures.
