Last week in science Reception Class were comparing different habitats within our school setting, to find out which minibeasts like to live where and thinking about why. They soon discovered that minibeasts do not like the tarmac on the playground! The children had a think about why this might be and decided that there was no shelter, food or water for them there, so they then took their search to other places, including the strawberry patch, the flower bed, the outdoor classroom and under rocks and bark. There were lots of different bugs in all these places, including ants, snails, woodlice and beetles. The children were very mindful of their responsibilities as stewards of God’s creation and were careful not to harm any of the creatures they found, and to put any they moved back where they found then (great Catholic Social Teaching in action). Back in class Reception looked for patterns across the different habitats and discovered that they found ants and woodlice in all of the habitats and only bees in the flowerbed.
In Maths the class have been learning about numbers between 10-20, looking closely at how many tens and ones make up each number. The children worked in groups to sort a range of different representations of the numbers.
In their RE lesson the class went to church to learn about when we become part of God’s family through baptism. Christine very kindly led the service and Mr and Mrs Baker were the proud parents of baby Henry Jack, who was baptised at Holy Redeemer Church that afternoon! Everyone then enjoyed a party back at school after the baptism celebration, including a healthy snack and lots of dancing! This was a great way to learn about the Catholic Social Teaching element of ‘Family and Community’.
