Yesterday Reception Class had a fantastic time in Forest School. In class they had been learning about snails, so they set out straightaway on a snail hunt, equipped with magnifying glasses and binoculars. The children found lots of silvery snail trails, but not a single snail! This got them wondering about where the snails might have gone, and of course their first thought was that Lanky Len and Heft Hew might have returned and stolen them! Another idea was that perhaps those Rotten Romans had returned… On further investigation a group of children found some glitter, leading them to the theory that perhaps mermaids had come and taken the snails. The class talked about how it is important to take care of all God’s creatures and that this is an important job, called stewardship.
Whatever the reason for the lack of snails, the children decided to make up for this by making some snails of their own, using natural materials in the Forest School area, as well the tyres and ropes. Some children made teeny, tiny snails with small sticks and stones, using sticky buds for antennae, whilst others made giant snails using the tyres.
At the end there was time for the children’s favourite game, 1-2-3 Where Are You? Sounds like a perfect afternoon.
