At Forest School this week Reception Class took their classroom-based learning about Chinese New Year, outdoors.
The children talked about the importance of the colour red in Chinese culture. They then searched the Forest School area to find and adapt natural items that they could use as paintbrushes. Working together the children mixed mud and water to paint, with which to write Chinese characters, using their natural brushes.
Mrs Andrews showed the class how the Chinese write and which of the Chinese characters corresponds to our alphabet. The children used this new knowledge to paint their initials (and in some cases their whole names) in Chinese!
At the end of the session there was time for the children to choose their own learning (such as digging and den play), before finishing off with a game of 1, 2, 3 Where are You?
