Last week, in Pre-School, the children continued exploring Traditional Tales, focussing on the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children explored different materials and used them to build their own bridges. They used tweezers to carefully place animals on top of their bridges, strengthening their fine motor skills and developing their problem-solving at the same time.
At the creative table, the children selected different materials such as card, paint and googly eyes, to design their own troll faces. At the mark-making table, the children used whiteboard pens to carefully follow a line from one of the goats across the bridge, supporting correct pen grip and control.
During our adult-led maths activity, the children each rolled dice and counted out the same number of cubes from a group, practising 1:1 correspondence and beginning to subitise. They also explored adding and taking away objects, before counting how many remained.
In the outdoor area, the children enjoyed role playing and retelling the story of the Billy Goats Gruff, taking it in turns to be the goats and trip, trap over the bridge, and also to be the ogre and jump out from underneath the bridge! During outdoor learning we also visited the school pond and the children were amazed to see how may tadpoles are living in it at the moment
In the two-year-old room, our youngest pupils enjoyed a colours-themed week of learning. The focus book being, ‘Wow Said the Owl’, by Tom Hopgood. The children used different coloured shapes to talk about the features of the owl and focus on using vocabulary such as ‘beak’, ‘eyes’ and ‘body’ to describe him. They also practised their tipping and pouring skills, using jugs, cups and water-great fun!
