Pre-school: Billy Goats Gruff Week

During Billy Goats Gruff Week, pre-school based their learning around this well-known traditional tale. The children loved the story and were very motivated to practise their maths counting skills by adding the right number of ‘hair’ pegs to trolls, so that the number of hairs matched each troll’s numeral. The class also worked on developing their understanding of size and comparisons of size, by ordering billy goats from biggest to smallest.

In their imaginative play the children really enjoyed retelling the story, using the small world tray. It was amazing to see how much of the story they remembered and to hear how gruff they could make their voices!

As part of developing their prediction skills and understanding of emotions, the children thought about what might have happened to the troll after he fell off the bridge at the end of the story, and making troll faces to show how he might have felt.

In their outdoor learning the class had the opportunity to work together on a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activity, and design and build a solution for how to get to the other side of the ‘river’. They did an amazing job, coming up with lots of workable solutions, then practised their balancing skills by crossing the bridge they had made.

In our two-year-old room the Billy Goats Gruff theme continued, with the children making salt dough trolls, colour matching and making troll faces, as well as acting out the story and working on their fine motor skills by using large tweezers to pick up fluffy ‘billy goats’.

This week the children also helped to look after the school garden, planting seeds and watering them. We can’t wait to watch them grow over the coming weeks!
