The children in Pre-school completed their nursery rhyme half-term with the Queen of Hearts, which coincided perfectly with Valentine’s Day. To celebrate, they made Valentine’s Day cards for their special people by cutting paper into small pieces and arranging them into a heart shape with the message, “I love you to pieces.”

During PE, the children practised their climbing and balancing skills as well as jumping, ensuring that they landed with both feet together.

They also used the correct pencil grip to trace over lines on hearts of various sizes. The patterns included zigzags and wavy lines, which will help improve writing skills as the children prepare for Reception Class.

To strengthen their fingers, the children threaded string through holes in a red heart.

The highlight of the week was making tarts! Using a scale, the ingredients were poured and measured, using gross motor skills to squeeze and push to form a ball of pastry. As a class, the decision was made to practise generosity by offering a jam tart to the teachers, who were very grateful! This activity ties into the current RE topic, “God our Father Cares for Us,” with the children drawing pictures of their family at church, discussing what they enjoy about attending church and the church family.

Our ‘adventure ants’ had a great time making mud tarts. They collaborated by carrying the digging basket to the digging station and used their gross motor skills to fill the tart trays.

In Maths, the children explored repeating patterns using different coloured hearts. Together, they created several patterns, designing their own during their independent learning time.

Finally, the children created portraits using paint, and transformed their pictures by adding crowns and turning themselves into kings and queens.
