Recently, Hopscotch have been learning about animals. After looking at sea animals the children were curious to explore going on holiday, and travelling, so we have taken their learning in that direction. We have used two books, Toddle Waddle, by Julia Donaldson and The Journey Home from Grandpa’s, by Jemima Lumley.
We used our senses to explore in our play. In Squiggle while you Wiggle, the foam had ice cream sprinkles, and there was sand in our playdough. On the light box we had to arrange different shapes on the ice cream cut outs. The children also explored forces, by using magnets; sorting out magnetic and non-magnetic objects. The children enjoy sorting, and they used this skill to sort different vehicles, deciding which were forms of transport that could take us on holiday, or not.
The children enjoyed a turn-taking game, which helped us with our communication skills, as well as describing what we could feel with our feet in the paddling pool.
The children found a large box that they thought looked like a longboat. They asked to decorate it, and took turns in sailing away on an adventure, before carrying it back to shore. Their imaginative play came in useful, when we made a beach using some yellow and blue material. The children even practised their pretend swimming skills.
We continued to practise for our mini sports day and the children can’t wait to show their special adults how great they are.
Well done, Hopscotch.
